Blizzard Beach is the newest of the two Disney World water parks. One thing we love about Disney is they always go a little farther to make your experience more interesting. Rather than just to a bunch of water rides and call it a water park, there is a fun unifying theme to Blizzard Beach.
The "backstory" to Blizzard Beach is that there was a snowstorm in Florida and so Disney started to construct a ski resort, until of course things started to melt in the Florida sunshine! So there is a ski theme to all the rides and plenty of "melting" ice and snow everywhere...lots of great little touches to the point where you can almost believe that some misplaced alligator on skis could be running about the water park.
Blizzard Beach is located in between MGM Studios and Animal Kingdom on the sprawling Walt Disney World property. The last time we visited, we stayed at Disney's Carribean Beach resort which is centrally located between both waterparks. One advantage to staying at a Disney resort is that they have "extra magic hours" for resort guests, which often means you can go to the water parks an hour earlier than anyone else. This gives you a good 90 minutes to two hours before the parks really get crowded, and you can find a good place to set up your towel, get your locker, and enjoy some rides without crazy lines.
The centerpiece attraction of Blizzard Beach is a very tall waterslide called "Summit Plummet". Watching people go down this ride is amazing...you can barely see the person through the WHOOSH of water they generate on the way down, reaching speeds of up to 55 miles per hour.
